About Points South
What happens when you bring thirty-four recent college graduates to St. Petersburg, stuff them full of good ideas about journalism, and then set them loose on a community beat?
You're looking at it.
Points South is the product of an intense six-week summer fellowship for recent college graduates happening right now at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. It began on June 6, 2003, and will run until July 18.
The program is divided into two affinity groups that work closely together: one specializes in visual journalism, the other in news reporting and writing.
The Poynter faculty leaders for the visual journalism group are Kenny Irby, George Rorick, and Sara Quinn. Keith Woods and Kelly McBride lead the news reporting and writing group, with help from Chris Martin, dean of the PI Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University.
This site, which features stories from St. Petersburg reported by the summer fellows, is maintained by Robin Sloan, one of last year's fellows now on staff at Poynter. The copy editor is Vicki Krueger, who keeps a bag of Doritos stashed in her desk -- just in case.
Keith Woods on being open in the newsroom: "The worst things that happen in journalism happen amidst silence."
Don Bartletti on reporting: "Our job as a journalist is not to solve the problem but get the attention of those who can solve the problem."
On racism in the old days: "Thank God for these new times because the good old days sucked."
"Sometimes you just have to step back from all your notebooks and feel."
...on finding the story within a story: "Everything is about something else."
...on finding the focus in a story: "The bouillon cube changes and you just have to remind yourself of what the story is about."
