The Rainbow Flag had eight stripes prior to 1982. Hot pink to represent sex; red to represent life; orange to represent healing; yellow to represent sun; green to represent serenity; turquoise to represent art; indigo to represent harmony; and violet to represent spirit. Hot pink and turquoise were removed in 1982 for ease of manufacturing, said Susan Stryker, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Historical Society.
