Alberto Rigau (West of 34th)

I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I went to Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola for my intermediate and high school level education. From there, I moved to Syracuse, N.Y., to attend the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. I double-majored in graphic design and anthropology. I've been freelancing for three years, and over that time I have developed relationships with a number of clients, some here in the United States, some in Puerto Rico and even one in Estonia. Most of my work has been in publication and identity design, but I have also done advertising, environmental, sign and other kinds. What are my plans after graduation? That's the question that everyone asks, as if I already had a definitive answer. I do not really know where I am headed. What I know is that as my career unfolds, I will do everything in my power to prevent being labeled as a "graphic designer." I want to explore. I do not only want to do print design. I do wish, eventually, to be labeled a "designer." I want to be known as someone who can manipulate many mediums and forms. The Poynter Institute will be my first step toward this growth. After all of this? I don't even have the slightest idea, but I will let time tell.
