Alicia Gallegos (The Beaches)

Alicia Gallegos is a 23-year-old graduate of the University of Northern Colorado. She majored in speech communication and minored in journalism. She describes herself as passionate, determined and genuine. For the last three years, she has worked at the university newspaper, The Mirror, where she was promoted to news editor and trained a staff of 15 employees. In 2003, Alicia spent the summer as a communications assistant for the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. During her time there she gathered experience building press releases, press kits and working with media relations. Before coming to the News and Reporting Fellowship at Poynter, Alicia freelanced for two Colorado newspapers, the Greeley and Windsor Tribunes. Alicia has done multiple volunteer projects including speaking at the 2001 Latina Youth Conference, and participating in Race For the Cure, a fundraiser to benefit Breast Cancer awareness. Her future career plans include being a reporter for a major newspaper or magazine, traveling and educating others about the importance of diversity.
