Gulfport Artists Display Talents in Biweekly Artwalk

By Jonny Sheets

About a decade ago, the Art Walk began as the area around Beach Boulevard was quickly emerging as an artist's community. Micki Vaughn, curator of the Gulfport Historical Society, says small galleries started popping up in the area and the Art Walk began as a means to advertise the work of local artists. The area has gone through tough times in past years with rents getting higher. "It's been a fight to keep things going," says Vaughn. Even though parts of Beach Boulevard are in transition, the area still has a reputation for being a quaint, funky artist's town. Michael Kuncz (above), a local artist, sells his art work in front of Emily's Framery and Gallery.

Peter Saurez, a member of a traveling troupe called Los Boleadoros and a dancer for the Metropolitan Opera, twirls his lasso out on 54th Street South.

Marla Cindric, owner of Bone Soir pet wraps, provided clothes for the dogs in the Art Walk doggy fashion show.
