Here are two perspectives on the recent St. Petersburg City Council meeting provided by Points South visual journalists: A photo by Dave McCreery and an illustration by Javier Govea.

I first viewed St. Petersburg from above as I descended in an airplane. My perspective of this city is fragmented and I illustrated this idea by cutting up maps showing the town in great detail and another that placed St. Pete in context of Florida.

My project is a sign for a city that takes its themes seriously. There's too much logic in this town; things make too much sense to be natural.

The other things that drew my attention were the architecture of the arches and the unified usage of colors for the buildings. If people want me to tell them about St. Pete, I will tell them to check out the Pantone colors 148C, 169C, and 332C.

Why flip-flops? Usually I don’t wear anything but my Reef sandals during the summer—so much so that I have a really bad tan line. So I decided to take a pair of flip-flops and make them my own.

In this project to illustrate St. Petersburg, I have chosen to create a collage. Fused together, these bits and pieces of magazines, cards, and maps capture my initial impressions of St. Petersburg.
